An industry analyst predicts a full Xbox Two reveal at E3 2020
The Xbox One is on its way out. That's pretty much a given, at this point: the current generation of Xbox consoles has been with us since 2014, and despite an unprecedented mid-cycle upgrade - the 4K-ready Xbox One X - we're beginning to set our sights on the future.
As it happens, both Microsoft and Sony are too. Microsoft has confirmed that work on the Xbox Two, currently codenamed 'Scarlett,' is well underway; this new console, or family of consoles, will have staunch competition from both Sony and Slightly Mad Studios in the form of the PlayStation 5 and the Mad Box.
A full release might be a long way off, but speculation is rife, and leaks are beginning to spring from the corners of the internet. Read on for everything we know so far about the Xbox Two.
Xbox Two: Everything we know so far
The Xbox Two is almost certainly on its way, as we've known for quite some time now. During Microsoft’s E3 2018 conference in June, the tech giant revealed it is well into the process of making the new console. Phil Spencer, Executive President of Gaming at Microsoft, said his team is already “deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles”.
A family of consoles
Consoles. Plural. Well, we didn’t expect that. Instead of releasing a lone base console, followed up by a more powerful “X” edition and a smaller, cheaper “S” edition – a la Xbox One – Microsoft could be planning to unleash them all at once. But we’ll probably have to wait a couple of years to get our hands on them.
Tried and trusted Microsoft insider website Thurrott reports that the as-yet-unannounced successors to the Xbox One line of consoles have received codenames. These consoles all fall underneath the project titled 'Scarlett' that we will discuss below. According to Thurrott, Microsoft describes the 'Anaconda' model as 'Scarlett Pro,' and 'Lockhart' as 'Scarlett Arcade.' 'Danta,' conversely, is the name of the Scarlett devkit, based on the 'Anaconda' hardware/software. Confused? Me too.
To liken them to current-gen consoles: The 'Anaconda' console is likely to be a successor the Xbox One X, where the 'Lockhart' will resemble a next-gen Xbox One S. The remaining codenames - 'Anthem,' Maverick,' and 'Roma' - refer to projects currently underway in the so-called 'xCloud' department. 'Anthem' is the Xbox One S of this cloud platform - a reduced price console that will undoubtedly feature some notable cutbacks in the hardware department in favour of the cloud streaming project.
'Maverick' is the name given to the disc-less next-gen console that we will also be discussing below; 'Roma,' on the other hand, is an unusual "digital attach" feature that will allow customers instant access to the current GamePass and upcoming cloud services.
